Who we are

Our History
What started as a small meat delivery business in Nova Scotia in 1907 has grown into one of Canada’s largest companies, with 128,000 teammates across the country. Today, Sobeys is one of Canada’s largest grocery retailers and consistently named one of Canada’s prestigious Top 100 Employers. We operate 1,600 retail stores and more than 350 fuel locations.
And while we’ve expanded from coast to coast, our values remain the same. We haven’t forgotten our modest beginnings or our long-held promise to Canadians: to put customers first.
Guided by our core values – Customer-Driven, People-Powered, Community-Engaged, and Results-Oriented – we deliver exceptional experiences for our customers in a workplace where our people can thrive.

Our Purpose
As a “family nurturing families,” Sobeys is committed to fostering a culture of care, trust and respect. We work together to tackle challenges head-on to better support each other and our customers. By encouraging everyone to be their best, we can make an even bigger impact in our communities. That’s the benefit of a great team. The more we work together, the greater our success.
At Sobeys, we’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re ambitious about where we’re going. Our actions are guided by our commitment to positively impact people and the planet, and to serve products that nurture the diverse needs of Canadian families, both today and in the future. As we continue to grow and evolve, our people are at the center of it all – shaping the future of grocery, one community, one innovation, and one teammate at a time.
We nourish millions of families across Canada and are deeply committed to community investment. Our communities are all about how we come together as partners to make progress, tackle shared challenges and ensure everyone can prosper. Providing access to healthy and affordable food, nutrition, education and early interventions in child and youth mental health means healthier tomorrows for more Canadians.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DE&I”) is core to who we are and everything we do. Fostering a family culture of care, trust, respect and inclusion is vital to the success of our people.
Our strategy is focused on:
Andrea Cossette, Bakery Manager in Barrington Passage (Nova Scotia)
A life-long baker from Nova Scotia took her passion for bread and developed a novel recipe our customers love. Andrea Cossette is one of our Value Champions.
