Overview

 

As the OHS Specialist you will develop and execute initiatives for our Stores, Retail Support Centre's and Offices that enhance safety culture and improve prevention practices. The OHS specialist plays a key role in supporting the operations team to meet Business Unit targets for lost time, incident frequency and severity.

Job Description

 

 

As the OHS Specialist you will:

 

  • Investigate workplace incidents or illnesses and initiate corrective and preventative actions as required/ directed
  • Conduct basic and causal analysis incident investigations and make recommendations to the management for close-out on an as needed/directed basis
  • Facilitate an effective and pro-active consultation process including Safety Groups
  • Identify and evaluate risks associated with the physical, chemical and biological hazards in the workplace and recommend changes to eliminate or control these hazards
  • Audit workplaces and field staff for health and safety hazards 
  • Identify health and safety needs and training required, deliver training, programs, procedures and take steps to ensure compliance with legislation
  • Actively encourage safe work practices to promote a positive safety culture
  • Facilitate OHS training sessions
  • Build relationships and coordinate interactions with internal/ external resources
  • Assist in the development/ implementation/monitoring of proactive accident prevention programs. 
  • Liaise with managers, supervisors, employees and external agencies (MOL, WSBC/WCB, etc.) to ensure compliance with legislation
  • Work with, and provide general advice to managers and supervisors ensuring compliance with all appropriate legislation, specifically, OH&S Act and Worker Compensation Legislation
  • Provide support and counsel to Sobeys operations in the region in matters of preventive health and safety and workplace injury management
  • Assist with WCB/ STD/ LTD claims management
  • Participate in investigations of serious accidents as required
     

Job Requirements

 

Your resume and experience will show:

 

  • Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in Health and Safety
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and its associated regulations, WSIB/ WCB legislation, auditing protocols
  • 3 to 5 years of industry related experience in Health and Safety
