Sobeys is full of exciting opportunities and we are always looking for bright new talent to join our team! We currently have an opening for a Head of Taxation to join our Finance Corporate Controller Team.

This critical role in the Finance team is the senior leader of the Taxation team for Sobeys Inc. and it's subsidiaries, and parent company, Empire Company Limited.  

The Head of Taxation is accountable for Corporate Income Tax and Indirect Tax (including GST/HST/PST and other indirect tax areas such as tobacco and environmental) and advises on Customs and Duties, as required. 

Here’s where you’ll be focusing:

  • Lead a team of taxation and finance professionals, managers and directors in tax accounting, compliance and related disclosures, strategic tax planning and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Finance and Legal to ensure tax considerations are integrated into the company strategy 
  • Lead the tax regulatory compliance including oversight of the quarterly and annual income tax provisions, federal and provincial tax return filings, managing tax authority audits and documentation of tax positions taken
  • Manage cash taxes through regular income tax forecasting
  • Assess operational tax impact of M&A activity and/or internal corporate reorganizations
  • Manage and monitor existing tax planning strategies in place, and proactively lead the identification, research, and evaluation of opportunities and risks associated with taxation matters
  • Leadership accountability to change management associated with taxation initiatives
  • Review and advise on taxation consequences in strategic initiatives as well as provide general advice, support and education to the broader finance function and operational leadership on taxation matters
  • Provide continuous monitoring of taxation legislation and have oversight of process change associated with changes to taxation legislation
  • Manage and develop relationships with external advisors on taxation matters
  • Lead functional team and drive employee development and engagement 
  • Develop strong working relationships with other departments 

What you have to offer:

  • A minimum of 12 years working experience in a financial environment within a large or complicated tax group 
  • Bachelor of Commerce (or equivalent) with focus in Finance, Accounting, or Economics
  • 5+ years working experience in a leadership position
  • Completion of CPA Canada / CICA In-depth Taxation Program
  • Working knowledge of current International Financial Reporting Standards (GAAP) and emerging issues, with significant emphasis on Income tax accounting
  • Knowledge of OSC rules and regulations related to financial reporting and public disclosure requirements 
  • Substantial knowledge of Canadian tax legislation with some knowledge of US tax laws including transfer price rules and regulations
  • Excellent organizational ability, able to handle multiple projects with a high level of accuracy and meet critical deadlines
  • Proven track record in tax planning, managing controversies, and ensuring compliance for income tax and indirect tax
  • Demonstrated experience in technical tax research, M&A tax planning, and project management
  • Significant experience in resolving income and indirect tax disputes with federal and provincial authorities, including negotiations and settlements
  • Aptitude for understanding new technologies, data management and continuous improvement
  • Strong ability to influence and work collaboratively with others
  • Ability to create a positive team working environment
  • Strong oral & written communication skills
