The Sustainability Manager (Planet) will be an integral part of the Sobeys Inc National Corporate Sustainability team and lead the development of strategy and implementation of key initiatives related to the “Planet” pillar of our corporate Environment Social and Governance (ESG) framework.  The Manager will drive the delivery, tracking and reporting of strategic objectives related to waste reduction (food and plastic waste, store waste diversion) and our Climate Action Plan.  Reporting to the Director, Corporate Sustainability, the role will network and partner with a variety of functions across the business, as well as external partners.

Job Description

Planning and executing strategy and initiatives

  • Responsible for the development, planning and execution of the strategy and tactical initiatives to deliver on Sobeys Inc’s waste and Climate Action Plan targets
  • Provides expertise and leadership in the development and advancement of our waste reduction and Climate Action strategy 
  • Develop and manage action plans to ensure effective delivery of targets and related activities/programs

Partnering/ Networking to achieve actions

  • Network, engage and partner with teams across the business (especially in Real Estate, Operations, Strategic Sourcing, Sourcing & Merchandising, Own Brands, Finance) to develop pilots, feasibility studies and build business cases for projects to deliver on our greenhouse gas (GHG) and waste reduction targets   
  • Lead engagement with Own Brands and Sourcing & Merchandising teams to embed climate action and waste reduction targets into supplier evaluations and engagements
  • Identify and drive opportunities to innovate and partner with external stakeholders (e.g. suppliers, industry associations) to deliver and advance our GHG and waste reduction targets across our supply chain
  • Build and manage relationships with key external stakeholders (e.g. Retail Council of Canada, partner NGOs)   

Data tracking and governance

  • Develop and manage data governance, tracking and reporting (internal and external) to ensure accurate accounting of GHG emissions and waste output across our business 
  • Identify key regulatory or reputational risk related to climate change and waste reduction and propose, develop and implement policy documents and processes to ensure risk mitigation and regulatory compliance (e.g. climate risks & opportunities, plastics regulations)
  • Complete annual sustainability disclosures (e.g. CDP Climate Change, TCFD)
  • Be a lead contributor to the annual Sustainable Business Report 

Sustainability Expertise

  • Provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership in ESG 

Job Requirements

  • Masters degree in climate or environmental science, sustainability or related field of study
  • Minimum of 7-10 years experience in sustainability related field, preferably related to GHG accounting (e.g. GHG Protocol), waste management and/or corporate sustainability. This includes developing sustainability strategy and executing programs. 
  • Experience in delivery of strategy and action plans, including executions of processes, tools and programs 
  • Experience in retail an asset 
  • Experience within climate change, food waste and plastics & packaging topic areas an asset
