We have an immediate opening for a Learning Specialist (12 month contract) to join our National Learning & Development Centre of Expertise located in our Mississauga, Ontario corporate office.  This role will work on a variety of adult learning strategies for our Retail Stores, Distribution Centres (RSC's) and Corporate Offices as an Instructional Design expert. To be successful in this role, the Learning Specialist must have a collaborative and team-based approach to developing content for E-Learning, instructor led and blended delivery models. The individual will work on many cross-functional teams and consult with the business on a regular basis.  The successful candidate will need to exhibit exceptional writing skills and creativity to design and develop results-driven learning and performance support solutions that align with Sobeys' vision, strategic direction and learning strategy. 



Instructional Design

  • Design and develop learning solutions across a range of learning mediums
  • Influence the selection of appropriate approach, media, and delivery options
  • Research, write, and develop the content for assigned learning solutions, including facilitator guides, participant material, evaluations, storyboards, scripts, and PowerPoint presentations
  • Use exceptional writing skills, and adapt writing style to address audience needs and platform requirements when developing all learning solutions
  • Ensure all solutions conform with company learning standards
  • Move beyond “doing the work” and foster a culture of continuous improvement by providing breakthrough thinking and innovation within your scope of control
  • Apply current research and theory to the practice of instructional design
  • Engage in personal development and be receptive to coaching, support and direction in terms of on-the-job learning and formal training
  • Help foster a coaching culture by being receptive to coaching and providing feedback to others as appropriate

Project Management

  • Manage time and coordinate tasks and activities related to the development of assigned learning solutions
  • Communicate progress and problem solve to overcome any obstacles to achieving timelines

Partner Engagement:

  • Build meaningful relationships with all key stakeholders and partners
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and team members throughout the design and development process
  • Ensure delivery of expectations and results
  • Utilize instructional design expertise to help gain partner acceptance of initiatives
  • Use superior communication and interpersonal skills in all interactions
  • Ensure exceptional service, same day response to enquiries and appropriate follow-up and follow-through on all commitments
  • Navigate through the organization and leverage network of contacts to achieve project objectives

Business Management:

  • Drive to the project plan – ensuring that key stakeholders and partners are proactively advised of tasks and changes
  • Ensure flawless execution of all aspects of an initiative



  • Must have a university degree or college diploma
  • Ideally completed adult education, instructional design, or information architecture studies
  • Intermediate skills in current Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience developing soft-skill learning solutions
  • Direct experience designing and developing learning solutions incorporating adult learning principles across a range of platforms including webinars, web-based, synchronous online, satellite, workshops, and self-study


  • Experience designing and developing eLearning courses with Articulate Storyline or similar authoring software


  • Bilingual (French and English written and verbal) would be an asset
