Overview

Job Description

The Specialist, Health & Safety is responsible for ensuring the implementation & maintenance of health and safety initiatives and policies at the operations level with a focus on prevention. The Specialist ensures compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and conformance to Sobeys Health and Safety Policy. The goal being to provide a healthy, safe and secure work environment at retail, retail support centres, and backstage. This position is responsible for the implementation and on-going sustainability of the health and safety management system.

 

Key Business Functions, Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

 

  • Assist in the implementation/monitoring of proactive accident prevention programs.
  • Facilitate an effective and proactive consultation process with managers, supervisors, employees and external agencies (MOL, WSIB/WCB, etc) to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Work with and provide general advice to managers and supervisors ensuring compliance with all appropriate legislation, specifically, OH&S Act & Worker’s Compensation Legislation as they relate to safety prevention programs and compliance.
  • Provide support and counsel to Sobeys operations in the region in matters of preventive health and safety and workplace injury management.
  • Investigate workplace incidents or illnesses and initiate corrective and preventative actions as required/directed.
  • Conduct basic and causal analysis incident investigations and make recommendations to the management for close-out on an as needed/directed basis.
  • Identify and evaluate risks associated with the physical, chemical and biological hazards in the workplace and recommend changes to eliminate or control these hazards.
  • Review frequency and severity statistics, and identify regional causation trends.
  • Audit workplaces and field staff for health and safety hazards.
  • Site visits for purpose of coaching, inspecting, and following up on compliance.
  • Identify health & safety needs and training required, facilitate training, programs, procedures and take steps to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Actively encourage safe work practices to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Build relationships and coordinate interactions with internal/external resources.
  • Participate in investigations of serious accidents as required.
  • Administrative and other duties as required.
  • Manage, lead, coach and develop District Safety Coordinators.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications, Capabilities, Skills and Experience:

 

Technical Skills

  • Must have strong judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • Possess ability to establish relationships and interface with customers and employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong communication both written and oral, and organizational skills with attention to detail; strong customer service skills
  • Public speaking, presentation and training skills
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act and it's associated Regulations, WSIB/WCB legislation, Auditing protocols
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office and with database applications
  • Problem solving skill and proven analytical skills
  • Organized and outstanding administrative ability and ability to perform multiple tasks at a given time
  • Maintain confidentiality

Preferred:

  • Medgate
  • Accident/Incident Investigation

 

Education and Working Experience

  • Post Secondary Education in Health & Safety (Certificate or Diploma)
  • 2-3 years of industry related experience in Health & Safety
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred:

  • CRSP
  • College or University Degree
  • 2-3 years retail experience

 

Working Conditions:

Retail Store

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Exposure to varying temperatures over short periods of time
  • Exposure to sanitation and cleaning chemicals
