We currently have an opportunity for a Manager of Design & Store Planning, Western Canada to join our National Design team. The position will be based out of our regional office in Calgary, Alberta. In this role you will manage the design and development of new, expanded or renovated retail stores, including site development, store planning / design (including décor) consistent with the Capital Plan. Additionally, you will lead Design Staff in the execution and production of design drawings and plans.
NOTE: As a valued manager working in a hybrid environment, you will be required to be in office a minimum of three (3) days per week.  
 

Here’s where you’ll be focusing:

Processes and Systems: 

 

  • Adhere to and utilize implemented processes, protocols and technical solutions for all design activities.
  • Actively contribute to a positive, productive, and innovative work environment and maintain strong collaborative relationships. 
  • Work with the Director of National Store Design, Real Estate team, Regional Construction Director and Project Management (Construction), and Regional Retail Operations to ensure that key company objectives are incorporated into project plans.  
  • In conjunction with the National Design team, develop design concepts for all projects. 
  • Conduct site reviews with regional stake holders as necessary to develop the scope of work for major and minor capital project. 
  • Review and obtain signoff on scope of work for all projects with the Regional Retail Operations teams and National Design Council team. Ensure that all design documents required for project submission for REAC approval are completed accurately and on time.
  • In consultation with the Regional Director of Construction and Project Management team, execute the development of design project schedules. 
  • Assist Real Estate Department with all design aspects related to Real Estate Agreements. Including the review of site plans, exterior elevations, and providing technical support, (site engineering, geotechnical reports etc), relative to the development of projects. Ensure that all National Design standards are being adhered to. 
  • Participate in final project inspection and post-mortem to establish recommendations for future projects. 
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment as per company requirements

 

People Leadership: 
 

  • Foster a coaching and mentoring culture within your department, ensuring you are willing and available to support your staff in their development. 
  • Work closely with regional Equipment Procurement team to ensure accurate execution of the Capital Plan
  • Manage Design Staff including selection, orientation, workload schedules, training and development performance management, succession planning, and compensation.

What you have to offer:

 

  • Excellent knowledge in the development of retail site plans, preliminary layouts, fixture plans. 
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Good working knowledge of Building Code requirements, and local government requirements. 
  • Ability to provide direction and decision making on design issues with Consultants. 
  • Excellent presentation skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Strong relationship building and management skills to achieve work related goals. 
  • Ability to manage a variety of complex projects simultaneously. 
  • Ability to manage shifting  priorities. 
  • Self-starter who will pursue specific courses of action while exhibiting high motivation, sense of urgency and can perform under stress and time constraints.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to gather and assess information, propose a recommended solution 
  • Understanding of expense and budget management.
  • Strong organizational skills - Customer Focus - Decision Making / Problem solving skills. 
  • Job Knowledge, building systems - Team Leadership - People Management.
  • Degree or Diploma in Architecture preferred. Interior Design and Project Management are an asset 
  • Bachelor of Technology degree of diploma in construction or architectural technology. 
  • 5 -10 years as a Senior Store Planner in the retail industry (preferably grocery retail). 
  • 7 -10 years in Architectural/Design firm, or industry related field. 
  • Experience as a Project manager for an Architectural / Design firm.

 

Preferred: 
 

  • 5 – 10 years of retail grocery store Design Management experience.
